Two-way trends
This season's trends are so versatile, you can wear them one way, then work them another.
From a subtle suggestion to a statement style, Tim Scott-Wright of Lisa Shepherd
Salons shows you how...

Back to the ’80sShaggy texture has been a style staple for several seasons now, but as fashion’s affair with the ’80s continues, it’s time to ramp it up and turn back time. Forget Alexa’s gently tousled texture of today and think Madonna circa ’85 in her Desperately Seeking Susan days. Lots more body, lots more ruffling and lots more attitude! Take two Sweep back one side and clip (or if you want to be totally retro, hunt out a comb!) in place, up near your crown. This exaggerates the shape and texture and is about as close to the ’80s style as it gets! |

Parting
waysWe’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — a parting is the quickest, cheapestand easiest way to change your look instantly and there’s not a scissor in sight! Backstage session stylists know the power of a parting, using it as a standby style solution if they need a new runway look fast! Liven up a middle parting with a simple braid running all the way through — a really pretty detail for the day and perfect if you want your parting to stay put. Take two A super-side parting will give you a completely different look in seconds. Use a tail comb to part hair just above your ear. Then flip the heavy side over to the other side for that instant, effortlessly cool ‘over the eye’ look. |

Good girl
glamOh how we love a new take on glam hair! This season’s look also goes a bit retro with a hint of the stylish ’70s in the mix. Chloé, Cavalli and Versace were just a few of the designers chanting the ‘glam is good’ mantra as their glossy good girl models bounced down the runway. Creating gorgeous curls and movement is the key to this look. “Plus, if you add height around the crown it will make the look that little bit more glam,” says hair guru Tim Scott-Wright, who styled all these looks. If your hair’s lacking in thickness, don’t worry, simply sweep it all over one shoulder. Take two Rather than leave the front loose, use your tail comb to create a rockabilly-style quiff! |

The new hive buzzThe beehive’s back! Relegated for a while to the likes of Ivana Trump and Ab Fab’s Patsy, it’s back in the style premiership and has already been spotted piled high on Diana Vickers’ barnet. Backcombing creates the height, so arm yourself with a bristle brush and go for it! Keep the finished look roughed-up with loose strands and random pinning for a fresh feel. “Make sure you dress this one properly though, otherwise you mightlook a bit Princess Anne,” says Tim. Take two Rather than leave the front loose, use your tail comb to create a rockabilly-style quiff! The Hollywood Katy Perry and Paloma Faith both know that retro waves and rolls are showstoppers, and you can make them work for you this season, too! If you’ve got a midi, then this is the perfect trend to reinvent it and marcel waves are easier than they look to create. Wind in some flexi rollers, blast with a hairdryer and once cool, gently brush through with a paddle brush to see the waves form. You’ll need to go over each section a few times, but they’ll take shape as if by magic! |

Take twoA fringe roll is the ultimate in retro styling but looks fabulously fresh this season. Wind your front section onto a heated roller. Once it’s cool, whip it out, roll the curl around your fingers and pin in place. “To finish, simply pull the rest of hair into a side bun to complete the look,” adds Tim. Take two ![]() “Long should be a statement and a cool way to wear this look is in a casually slung side braid,” says Tim. It’s a style you can only manage if your hair is well below bra-strap length, but hey, if you’ve got it, flaunt it! |

LA over-longInspired by the likes of Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port, over-long, natural-looking laid-back lengths are still trending into autumn. To work, this style has to look like you’ve put zilch effort into it (even though you have), and should be soft and slouchy. If you can’t wait for your hair to grow, reach for the extensions. Then use a tong and some salt spray for a boho-ish texture. Pony club Like leggings or Louboutins (depending on your budget!), the pony is a perma-trend that’s here to stay — yay! This season’s pony is a bit of a dark horse in that it’s definitely less of a daytime ’do and more of a party pony. The side pony is so easy to wear — the loose feel at the front is flattering for every face shape. Ponies look best when hair’s ironed smooth and sleek and remember, always cover the band with a strand of hair, wrapped round and pinned in place. A visible elastic is for the gym only! |

Minimal sleekMasculine tailoring and slick minimal lines were all over the catwalk this season and it’s that simplicity that’s echoed in this quick and easy trend. It’s a go-to look when time is short, as it’s no-fuss, looks great and takes 30 seconds — we love! Create a side parting and slick down the sides with a little serum for fail-safe styling. Take two Swap the serum for gel and slick up and back for a seriously sleek quiff. |

Upgrade your
accessoriesThe power of accessories knows no bounds and this season they’re bigger, bolder and blingier than ever. From full-on bows and statement headbands to D.I.Y. pony holders, there is an accessory to glam up any look, come day or night, plus it will instantly detract from a bad hair day! So hold your head high and just work that statement accessory with some serious style and bags of confidence to boot. Net a bargain Fancy-up party hair with some netting — cheap as chips and available from all fabric stores, you can create headbands or pretty bows. D.I.Y. not your thing? Hunt out a ready-made net creation from an accessory store. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
With the bandHunt out the most shiniest, sparkliest most fabulous hairband you can find and pop it on — job done! No time to nip to the shops? Use kirbies to clip in your favourite necklace instead. Take a bow Use an oversized bow and clip back one side of your hair to take the ’80s revival to the max. Find a lace one to earn yourself extra on-trend style points. |

Glossy grungeDon’t for a minute think this new version of grunge means greasy, limp locks that haven’t seen a brush for weeks. Oh no! New grunge is glossy and gorgeous and perfect for those girls who like to go against the grain! Ke$ha and Taylor Momsen are the poster girls for this look, so take their lead and dare to be different! Twist thin sections into dreads and seal with some serum and a spritz of hairspray. There’s no second take with this trend, you’re either a grunge girl or you’re not — so embrace it or avoid it! |
