7 Styling Tips for Curly Hair

Styling curly hair doesn’t have to be the challenge most people think it is.

1. Drop the brush and pick up a comb

Always a wide-toothed comb when styling curly hair. Hairbrushes—even the premium ones with fine bristles—aren’t designed to glide through your curls. Using a brush will only result in a lot of hair-pulling as well as unwanted frizz.
2. Comb your way up to the roots

Combing from the tip to the roots may seem counter-intuitive, but trust us, it’s the right thing to do. It makes detangling your hair easier, which is critical before you begin to attempt styling it.
3. Indulge in pineappling whenever you can

Pineappling involves loosely gathering your hair to the top-most point of your head and securing it. This will prevent gravity from dragging your curls out, thus making it easy to style. Pineapple your hair for a couple of hours before you have to style it.
4. Experiment with product cocktails

Most styling products work amazingly well for regular hair, but not so much for curly hair. It’s unfortunate, but it’s true—it’s just how most hair products are formulated. Consider making product ‘cocktails’ that work best for your hair’s styling needs. For example, need some stiffness to go along with the shine? Just add a dash of firm styling gel to your shine serum.
5. Don’t forget the diffuser

Your hair needs to be dried properly before you can use any styling products. Of course, while the blow dryer will do the trick, do not forget the diffuser! Using a diffuser will ensure your hair follicles are not subjected to too much heat, thereby not causing frizz. And we all know that hair without frizz is far more easier to style.
6. Keep pomade handy for slick looks

You may think that having curly hair means opting for slick looks is a gamble. However, it doesn’t have to be so. A good-quality pomade is all you need to the sleek hair you desire, especially if you want a pulled-back ponytail.
7. Finish styling by applying hair oil

After you have achieved the hairstyle you desire, and have used all the styling products needed, apply a bit of hair oil (coconut, preferably) to the ends of your hair. This will help restore any shine and lustre that may have been lost due to using styling products.
