It’s party season and you want
something different. Here’s our
pick of the best in-salon looks and
D.I.Y. tips to take you from the
office to the dance floor. Let the
fun begin!Feature Charisse Kenion Fashion forward "A high-fashion style such as the power ponytail really
makes you stand out from the crowd, and this is what makes
it perfect for the party season. It can be worn in many ways;
whether you opt for a tough dominatrix style, a girly ponytail
with loose waves and volume or off-duty supermodel, which
is very relaxed and toned down. To make the most of your
power ponytail, prepare by blow-drying the hair with a large
round bristle brush to create a voluminous but smooth base.
Pull the hair into a high pony — the crown of the head is the
perfect height. Secure with a clear snag-free band and brush
your pony smooth. If you’re lacking in the ponytail
department, why not use a clip in hairpiece to achieve this
look in an instant? Finish with a mist of shine spray."Martin Crean at Mode "Update the fishtail plait by wearing it on top of textured hair. Take two sections from either side of your head and twist them together to one side. Leave the hair underneath flowing freely. Now plait normally or go for a fishtail. Once done, secure with a clear elastic. Slightly wave the lengths with a tong and tease tiny bits of hair out of the plait for a tousled feel. For a glitzy touch, pin a jewelled accessory where the two twists meet." Neil Atkinson, Senior Creative Director at Mahogany Hairdressing "The plait is perfect for Christmas and it’s really simple to achieve at home. Pull hair loosely over one shoulder and begin plaiting — make sure you keep it fairly loose to allow strands to fall naturally outside of the plait, thus creating a casual look. Last, secure with a clear elastic and mist with a medium hold hairspray." Darren Ambrose of D&J Ambrose Celeb inspiration "Style inspiration from the likes of Cheryl Cole means that ultra-glam curls are bang on-trend. Curls are a fantastic choice because they are extremely versatile and look great for casual or formal occasions." Tiff J of 3thirty Hair and Beauty "As seen on the likes of Tyra Banks, Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger, the finger wave has real red-carpet impact. Prep hair with a blow-dry lotion before adding a centre parting and tonging the hair in even sections, making sure curls follow the same direction. Spray with a natural hold hairspray after each section. Once all hair is tonged, softly brush out each section, using a soft flat bristle brush to encourage waves. Finish with a serum to eliminate flyaways before fixing it with a hairspray." Wella Professionals Generation NOW Team member, Luke Benson, HOB Salons London |

Get to the salon!"This look is very indulgent and is inspired by the last Prada campaign. We used a single Marcel wave on dry hair and lightly misted to create a beautifully sculptured, 1920s look. This is a specialist style, not for everyone." Who it suits Those with mid-length hair and heart-shaped or oval faces. Ken Picton, Ken Picton salon "Go for a very defined finger wave set using a strong mousse and barrel tongs. Brush out the hair until smooth into a low chignon at the nape of the neck and spray lightly with a hairspray." Who it suits Those with mid to long hair, looking for a classic red-carpet style. Nick Bland, Bloww "To create this ultra-sleek and glamorous look, you need to set hair in heated rollers. Once cooled, take them out and use a paddle brush to brush the hair round to the back of the head (to the left-hand side), to create the large curl. Finish with lots of firm holding hairspray." Who it suits Anyone with long, thick hair. Donna Mitchell, Creative Director at Bonce Salons Retro glam "Add elegance and glamour with a big, bold, beautiful bird’s nest bun. Use a blowdrying volumising product for oomph and pull hair into a very high ponytail. Divide the pony into sections and backcomb before messing the lengths up. Then gently wrap hair around the ponytail in layers to build up shape. Secure with pins and hairspray. For that extra festive sparkle, finish with an embellished headband placed around the base." Barrie Stephen, Barrie Stephen Hair "Half up-half down is a classic Brigitte Bardot style that will glam up any party outfit. Prep with volumising mousse and blast roots with a hairdryer to activate some serious oomph. Curl hair with irons, then brush out for soft waves. Separate out a circular section at the top of your head and backcomb sections to build height before softly brushing the very top layer, smoothing it over the hair at the back. Work the hair into the desired roundness and height before securing it with pins and finish with a strong hold spray." Neil Smith, Creative Director at Barrie Stephen Hair "Go for a messy, not sleek, braided topknot. Start by texturising your hair, using a mousse or a cream texturiser. Turn your head upside down and braid from the nape to the top of your head (an inverted French plait). Tie and then gently pull at the plait to give a casual edge. Grab the end of the braid that sits on your head and twist into a knot or bun, remembering it doesn’t have to be polished — the more texture the better. Secure with pins and hairspray." Colin Greaney, International Creative Director at Mahogany Hairdressing "I love the Modern Beehive. Style it slightly undone and adorn with the most fabulous hair jewellery you can find. You’ll need a good backcombing brush, brushable hairspray and some pins to achieve this '60s style. Divide hair into two sections — front and back. Hold hair taut with one hand and backcomb with the other until it holds stiff. Spray liberally with a good spray and then smooth the hair out while keeping the height and body. Use pins to secure, ensuring the width and height of the structure suits your face shape. Spray again to finish, and complement the look with some red lippy. Fierce!" Kevin Kahan |
