Hair goes behind the scenes with Wella Professionals in Germany to get a glimpse of the latest trends in styles and colours as well as a sneak peek into their Global Technical Centre.

Text Anaita Vazifdar

An invitation to see the process of colour formulation and testing seems too good to pass up. Add to that the chance to interact with some of the best names in the hair industry and an exclusive trend show with live demonstrations, this is one event that cannot be missed. Be it the microscopes or the models, the colour or the catwalk, our backstage pass lets us bring you all the info.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE LAB

Get to the root of the matter

The Global Technical Centre is located in Darmstadt, a short ride from Frankfurt. A visit to the microscopy lab teaches us about the intricate structure of hair, letting us see — through a powerful microscope — the cuticle, cortex, medulla and other parts that constitute a single strand of hair.

Testing time

The company has three test salons spread across the globe — one in New York, one in Singapore and one here in Darmstadt. Globally, more than 1,000 tests are conducted in these salons every month. “Colour is nothing but reflected light,” we are told as we are led into an ante room that has controlled light conditions. The floors and walls here are grey, as this colour doesn’t influence others. Different lights reflected on the hair show how the strands get different tones. Models are ready and waiting so that we can see the way colours develop once they are placed on their hair. Virgin hair, oft-coloured hair and newly coloured hair…they are all here for us to see, touch and try.

Semi or demi?

Entering the colour formulation room, where we are asked to wear protective goggles, we are presented with different colour options. So, will it be semi-permanent, demipermanent or permanent colour for you? And is it a 6/45 shade you’d like or would you prefer to go darker? Couplers and primary ingredients, brushes and spatulas, could this be an art class we’ve wandered into?

Blast from the past…

The Global Technical Centre also houses a Wella museum, with memorabilia dating back to the first salon and products produced. Showcases spanning the length and breadth of the museum detail the chronological advancement of products and services from Wella’s history.

…And into the future

‘Backstage to the Future’ is a presentation focused on examining the potential future for the professional haircare industry. There’s a lot in store for us...

The magic of colour

Apart from being Wella Professionals’ Global Creative Director – Colour, Josh Wood is a name to reckon with on the international hair colour scene. His ever-expanding client list has him jetting across the globe, working with the who’s who in the business. Here, exclusively for Wella, he presented ‘Sensual Color’, a preview of the new colour collection, with models walking the ramp to showcase each look. (Read more about Josh in this issue of Hair.)

Style file

Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals’ Global Creative Director – Style, has worked at numerous fashion weeks and, especially for Wella, he showcased his Autumn- Winter ’10 hair trends, with models demonstrating how to get the look.

Helping him along the way was Dr. Frauke Neuser, Senior Scientist for Wella Professionals, who explained the difference between coloured hair and virgin hair, as well as the precautions one needs to take when hair is coloured.

There certainly seems to be a lot happening with Wella this year!
