Whenever we mention oils in a conversation, people tend to have opinions.
“They’ll clog your pores” “No wait you will face bad breakouts” “ Your skin will be more radiant”
To say the least, they are more confused than even you are.
Till a while we at HAIR were equally plagued with opinions on face oils, until we tried on the product ourselves (well actually it was the saleswoman who suggested so). And, truth be told, just applying some of that oil did wonders to our skin! Not just did it provide the excess oil that our skin required, but it also replenished our skin’s natural moisture levels.
Subtle on the skin, face oils are perhaps one of the best items to be found in the vanity kit. But again, using the right one is also essential. The right oil, of course, depends on your skin type. So which one is good for which skin type? And, is it good to use face oils everyday?
These and plus more questions would be answered in our first beginner’s guide to using face oils.
What are Face Oils?
Face oils are perhaps one of the best ways to achieve healthy, radiant-looking skin- no matter what your skin type (yes, even those of you with perpetually oily skin!). Jam-packed with nutrients like vitamin C, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants, face oils are known to penetrate the skin to transform and protect—helping to build a resilient skin layer known as the lipid barrier.
Reasons For Using Face Oils
Subtle and soft, these oils could easily be included in your daily skincare regime. But why use it in the first place? Well, below are the reasons why:
1.They can reduce wrinkles. There are some face oils that are packed with antioxidants, which help prevent further aging. Simply because, the oils pass through the skin quickly, preventing water loss and keeping the skin plump. Besides, the antioxidants present in these oils boost collagen production and strengthen skin elasticity, which helps reduce most of the fine lines.
2.They’re apt for those with dry skin. Face oils serve as the perfect antidote to dry, flaky skin and rough, rosy cheeks. Quick-absorbing and nutrient-rich, face oils help to deeply moisturize and soothe your skin.(Well, they’re at least better than using over-the-counter lotions and creams!)
3.They’re the perfect primer for makeup. Well at least some of them are! Oils such as mandarin and pumpkin seed zip through the top of the skin and settle in those areas that need hydrating the most. Besides, the nutrients in such oils gives the skin an immediate plumping effect and creates the perfect canvas that is required for your makeup (and, the smoother your skin, the better your makeup will look!)
4.They soothe out rashes. Many face oils contain certain antiseptic properties, which help to quell irritated skin. Face oils such as argan and yangu oils are ideal for reducing irritation and redness, which are one of the major causes of rashes.
5.They can reduce enlarged pores. Certain face oils such as those of macadamia and jojoba do actually pull out grime and fats from pores, making them appear smaller and less noticeable. But a word of caution! Only choose the face oils that contain the right quality ingredients. Unfortunately, oils that are readily available at certain stores could give you clogged, puffed-out pores, making your skin look only worse, than what it was before. So do consult your dermatologist before purchasing any such oils.
6.They’re good for oily skin. Yes, they are! Overly stripping oily skin in an attempt to get rid of that extra oily shine, could actually cause your skin to produce more oil – making your skin look even worse. Certain face oils could actually help balance your skin’s oil production and get rid of that excess oil on your face. Tea tree oil is one such face oil that does the trick.
Basic Tips: How to Apply Face Oils
When is the best time to use face oils? How much should you be using it? Does it need to be combined with other products? Oh the questions! Well don’t worry. Here are some of our share of basic tips that will help you get the most out of your face oils.
1.Massage the oils well. Instead of rubbing the oils on your face – like you would do with a moisturiser- just take some on your fingertips and massage gently across your face. As excess rubbing will cause sebums and further acne.
2.Just use a couple of drops, and not more! T’is because face oils are packed with so many nutrients that only a few drops would do the perfect job.
3.Apply as per your skin’s needs. This is essential for all. Not every skin type is the same, and thus, the application of the face oil depends highly on how much your skin needs. For example, while those with dry skin will need about three to four drops of these oils, those with oily skin might not. So be careful and apply only the amount that is required! However, one can use face oils both at morning and at night for a good-looking skin.
