Mothers Day Special
We’ll do it…our way

Where have you trained?
Fery: I did my training from Toni&Guy in Singapore and Australia, Shireen in Iran (exclusively for hair and make-up) and Shahnaz Husain in New Delhi.

Fareena: I was trained by L’Oréal in the seminars they conduct. I worked as a technician with Wella in Bangalore for a year and that gave me a lot of knowledge. But for the practical skills and experience, it’s seeing Mom
forever!
What, according to you, are the essentials to becoming a successful stylist?
Fery: My answer would only be passion. Unless you love this job, you cannot be a good stylist. You have to enjoy what you do.
Fareena: Passion and training. You must have a style statement of your own and I think you should feel good about making people feel good about themselves.

Do you think beauty and styling is an industry where creativity is important, or do you feel that training is imperative?
Fery: There are so many techniques you learn in haircutting and hairstyling. But finally, style is your own creativity. We learn the techniques but the style is ours. I still go abroad for short training sessions every year, because I love to learn. You learn newer techniques, get to see their skill, their work and refresh your own skills.

Fareena: Training is very important because you get to open up so much. I mean, you are creative and everything, but at these sessions, you take that one step ahead; you get more confident about your work, especially when your ideas match. When I see something similar at a L’Oréal or Wella session (which is like having a copyright on it), I think Wow, I thought about it! Then you feel you are on the same track, going the right way.

Fareena, have there been instances where you had to take on your mother’s clients? What was that like?
Fareena: It happens many times. Recently, when Mom was away at Rishikesh, there were 10-15 of her clients who were like, “Oh, you will cut it?” It’s very annoying. Because
it’s my mom’s salon, they think I’m an amateur, which is very unfair to me. Recently, there was this school principal who said, “Don’t do something funky!” I don’t know if it’s because of my appearance! After the cut, she said, “It’s the first time I have let a young person do anything for me and I’m very impressed.”

Fery, what words of wisdom do you have for your daughter in order for her to become a successful stylist?
Fery: Her observation is enough. I don’t have to advise her on anything. I would only ask her to be more patient. Patience is very important in your business, in whatever you do.

Fery on Fareena:

“She’s my best friend and critic. It’s a blessing to have her as my daughter. Work-wise, she’s
amazing in bridal make-up and colour techniques. In hairdressing, I love her boldness—in that context, I am a very safe person! She does a wonderful job and clients like the look.”

Fareena on Fery:

“I admire her patience. Her work is amazing. I am here because of her…although it’s my passion as well. She is a very beautiful person. What I really love about her—and what does not go down too well with the world—is that she doesn’t give a damn about what people think of her. And I like her experimenting with her look even at her age.”

You Said It..

“I live in a joint family and we are five women in the house and this mag is a steal… we all gain from it and look forward to the forthcoming issues.”
