Your hair woes – solved!

Whatever your hang-up, we have the buys and tips you need to start ironing out those problems so you’ll never have a bad hair day again.

Problem: My hair is long, thick and straight — how do I get it to hold a curl?

The weight of thick hair pulls out the curl. It’s also especially hard to keep curls in long hair. You probably find that you end up with curls at the ends of your hair, but not in the mid-lengths and roots.

Solution : Preparation is key — apply two golf ball-sized amounts of mousse into roots and mid-lengths. The type of curl is important, too. “For thicker hair, you need a tighter curl to fight the drop, so use curling tongs,” says Steven Goldsworthy from Goldsworthy’s Hairdressing, Swindon.
Take Action:
  1. Schwarzkopf Professional OSiS+ Grip Style Super Hold Mousse will help to hold the curls for longer.
  2. You may need to hold the tong on the hair for a few seconds longer if your hair is thick, so ensure you use a heat-protector spray. Try Andrew Collinge Heat Tamer Conditioning Spray.
  3. Hold the TRESemmé Multi-styler from Philips at the roots and wrap your hair around to the ends. This way the roots and mid-lengths are heated for longest

Problem: How do I get my hair to fall into those retro-style waves, rather than full-on curls?

Hairdressers call these waves ‘Marcel Waves’. They can be tricky to create and don’t work well on very thick hair — medium or fine hair is best. This look requires a smooth finish, so it doesn’t suit people with naturally curly hair either.

Solution : Marcel Waves look most stylish on mid-length hair. Part your hair to the side and tong in 4 inch sections. After tonging, pin each curl to your head until cool, then release the curl and brush out with a bristle brush. Use long strokes from root to tip, brushing large sections of hair to encourage the waves to form.
Take Action:
  1. For long-lasting hold, prep your hair with a styling lotion, such as Bumble and bumble Curl Conscious Calming Creme before creating the curl.
  2. Use a small-barrelled tong, such as the Wahl 19mm Steel Curling Tongs to give you good, tight curls to create your waves from.
  3. Brush through with a bristle brush to create your waves – try the Kent O518 pure bristle brush. Natural bristles reduce static, helping you to create a smooth finish.

Problem:My naturally curly hair always looks frizzy. How do I get it to look groomed and glossy?

Naturally curly locks are prone to frizz because they tend to be drier. They can also look wiry. Overloading curls with product to combat these problems isn’t the solution, as this can cause the hair to look dull.

Solution : After washing your hair with a moisturising duo, blot it dry. Dry it with a diffuser and avoid touching it too much. “Work some serum through the curls,” says top hairdresser Trevor Sorbie. “This helps to nourish the hair and repel moisture, which can make it frizzy.”
Take Action:
  1. Hydrate your hair with a shampoo designed for curls. Try Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo.
  2. Use a serum, such as Trevor Sorbie Serum Shine on both damp and dry hair — it should be all the product you need.
  3. A diffuser will enhance your curls naturally. Try the Remington D5020 Pro Ionic Ultra Hairdryer and diffuser.

Problem:Whenever I curl my fine hair, it falls limp. How can I add body and volume to my curls?

Lack of body is a major problem with fine hair. It’s hard to keep curl in the hair because the hair is naturally flat, but you can get glamorous curls if you prepare your hair well and use the right tools.

Solution : Use heated rollers to add volume at the roots. This works because you’re creating lift in the part of the hair that causes the flatness. “Rollers create a definite swing and bounce that you can’t get with anything else,” says super-stylist Sam McKnight. “Scatter them randomly throughout your hair.”
Take Action:
  1. Use a volumising product, such as Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Daily Boost to give your hair guts and body before you curl.
  2. Use different-sized heated rollers to create natural-looking waves. Check out Boots Heated Rollers.
  3. A finishing spray, such as Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray, will give your hair staying power but won’t leave a sticky residue.
