If you want the half-updo of your dreams, this is a must-read…

1. Ponytail or bun?
The first thing you have to figure out is if your half-up half-down hairstyle is a bun or a ponytail. And yes, it does make a big difference. If you’re planning on a bun, the placement has to be towards the crown—further back than where you’d start off with a ponytail. After all, it is a bun, not a hat.

2. Your best facial feature?
An effective half-updo is one that can be used to subtly highlight your best facial features. For example, to draw attention to your eyes, pull the hair back from the edge of your eyebrow arch. Or, let a few shorter pieces frame your face and draw attention to your lips. On the other hand, you can use an off-centre ponytail to keep the attention away from your nose.
3. If you have a round face…
…pull the ponytail high on the head to add visual length to your face shape. Use the temples on your forehead as a guideline.

4. If you have an oval face…
…use the edge of your eyebrows as a guide from where to pull the hair back. Oval face shapes can pull off any half-up half-down style, so don’t hesitate to experiment.

5. If you have a heart-shaped face…
…pull the hair back right in front of the ears. The hair that falls forward will visually soften the jawline.
