Upgrade your shade

Want a new colour this season? Try one of these updates

Some of us were born to be blonde; others suit a fiery red. Nothing is more alluring than a rich brown and some people look gorgeous with dark locks. But if you want a bit of a change, why not upgrade your shade? “A shade upgrade is perfect if you’re happy with your colour but just want to make it look ‘now’,” explains British Colour Technician of the Year Christel Lundqvist of hob salons. “It’s about wearing a different colour in your shade family—you’ll still be the colour you love but with an on-trend twist. It’s something celebs do all the time, and that’s why their hair always looks fresh.”

Reds Upgrade your shade with...
Rich sophisticated tones. If you think red wine, you’ll get the picture. These deep, dark reds
look great combined with rich browns as well as on their own.

Suits…
Striking and dramatic on cool skin but still wearable for warmer skin tones.

Dark Upgrade your shade with...
Gloss! The richer and glossier, the better, whether you’re thinking dark black pearl or deep blue-black inky shades (don’t be put off by the ‘blue’; it looks simply stunning on pale skin!).

Suits…
Amazing and superdramatic on cooler skin tones.
Blondes Upgrade your shade with...
Pastel tones—think champagne, vanilla, creamy white and beige. If you’re feeling a little brave, why not try soft lavender or salmon rose? These colours really are gorgeous even if they sound a little dramatic!

Suits…
Cooler skin tones generally. If you have a warmer skin tone, try these shades in a few scattered highlights.

Brunettes Upgrade your shade with...
Colours inspired by nature. Clay brown
and earthy muted tones are very now,
and because they look so natural, root
re-growth is kept to a minimum.

Suits…
These earthy colours are particularly good with warmer skin tones.

Colour for your complexion
If you’re unsure about what will suit you, take Christel’s advice:

“As a general rule, a warm skin tone is complemented by gold, red and orange shades, which can be found in all colours from blonde to reds and brunettes. A cooler skin tone will look better with beige, soft ash and cool red and burgundy tones.” If you’re colouring hair at home, try a gloss or temporary colour first if you’re unsure whether the shade you want will suit you.

You Said It..

“I live in a joint family and we are five women in the house and this mag is a steal… we all gain from it and look forward to the forthcoming issues.”
