LASH-A-LICIOUS

The eyelashes are a minute but a very important detail of your face. Aanchal Kataria tells you more about these lesser known attribute of your beauty and how to keep them gorgeous and healthy.

Just like our eyebrows, the eyelashes are the tiny hair on our eyelids whose primary function is to keep dirt, sweat, water, and other unwanted debris out of our eyes and protect them. The lashes on the top eyelid are generally much fuller than the lower lash line. In fact, they’re almost twice as full with about two to three hundred lashes whereas the lower eyelid has only about a hundred. The eyelashes are also historically considered to be a very important indicator of a person’s beauty quotient and their character. Like in ancient Egypt, testimonies have been discovered of smearing, dying and even ornamenting them in order to give more expression to the eyes or for magical or medicinal reasons as far back as 3,500 BC. The twentieth century proved to the century of revolution for eyelashes care and beautification since it introduced us to these two new innovations: a new, improved edition of our now very common, modern day mascara and also our present day version of artificial eyelashes.

Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with Bambi-like lashes but whether lush and long or sparse and very fine, it’s important to look after them. So here are some ways in which you can take care of your eyelashes and ensure they are healthy and strong:

• The importance to moisturise your lashes cannot be stressed upon enough. All of us are familiar with moisturising our skin but very few are familiar with the benefits of moisturising their eyelashes. Moisturising your eyelashes can prevent them from breakage and help them grow faster and stronger. Use petroleum jelly such as Vaseline as it is the best way to condition eyelashes, especially dry and brittle ones. You can also use natural oils like castor or sweet almond oil.

• The average growth cycle of a set of eyelashes is anywhere between thirty and sixty days but if your lashes are fragile and dry, then this cycle can be significantly shorter. You can do your best to stop this from happening by using a growth serum to combat any premature brittleness or breakage. The serum will keep your lashes as strong as possible for the entirety of their normal growth cycle.

• Choose a mascara which suits your eyelashes and not just something that makes them look voluminous and long. If not satisfied with one brand, then try another. Flaunting pretty eyelashes shouldn’t come at the cost of their health. There are a lot of mascaras available in the market that even contain vitamins and minerals that help eyelashes grow better.

• Be gentle on your lashes and treat them kindly. Avoid rubbing your eyes by all means because this can lead to pulling and breakage of your eyelashes. When your eyes are itchy just pat them gently with your finger and make sure your hands are clean before doing so.

• Avoid the frequent using of eyelash curlers. Their repeated usage will torture your lashes and make them prone to breaking and falling out. A clever tip is to heat up your lash curler with the hot air from a hair dryer before you proceed to curl your eyelashes. This works in exactly the same way a curling iron works for your hair by reducing the risk of breakage and helpings shape them easily too.

• You have to also make sure you eat healthy in order to achieve those stunning lashes. It might sound clichéd but your choice of food affects your eyelashes just like your hair and skin as well as the rest of your body. If your body doesn’t get its proper nourishment then your eyelashes will end up growing slower and finer. You should have a diet rich in foods containing proteins, vitamin C, E, H and B complex. Also, do not forget to drink plenty of water and keep your body hydrated.

• Avoid using false eyelashes as much as possible. Though you may want to flaunt Kardashian-like lashes everyday, avoid using fake lashes frequently. While false eyelashes make your eyes stand out and give them a more dramatic look, they can actually cause more harm than good to your lashes as sometimes the glue contains chemicals that may cause irritation or adverse reaction to your eyelids or lashes. So wear those fake lashes for important or big events only.
