Rameshwari Seth,
Founder, Neemli Naturals

How and why did you start this brand?
Neemli Naturals was started initially as an experiment from our farmhouse where we created cold processed soaps, with scrubs and face masks. The idea was to be as close to nature as possible. We did a season at the Goa flea market, then a whole bunch of other exhibitions and markets across the country. The response was beyond amazing and we knew we had something that resonated with people. The next step was to get official. We documented and formulated our recipes and officially launched the brand Neemli Naturals last year in June. Even a name like Neemli was hotly contested amongst all my team members who wanted a hip or western name but I was adamant on this name. Honestly, I don’t think the brand could have been called anything else anymore.

Tell us about the product range.
Most of our products cater to facial care ranging from creams, serums, oils, lip care, etc. We do have cold processed handmade soaps that cure for a month before we pack and sell them along with these body scrubs, body oils, hair oils, etc. The Hyaluronic & Vitamin C Serum is our top selling product with the Hibiscus & Saffron Night Cream, Argan and Rose Day, Caffeine and Cucumber Night Under Eye Cream, Rose and Patchouli Facial Toner and French Pink & Multani Clay Soap selling in that order.

What makes these products natural and eco-friendly?
We have stuck to our guns and insisted in using glass packaging that is 100 per cent recyclable, our boxes are made from recycled paper and our products are vegan, cruelty free and handmade. We have made sure ingredients such as squalane are derived from olives rather than shark liver. The same goes with the hyaluronic acid which is derived from sweet potato instead of being animal based. Furthermore, we have also ensured to get organic certified ingredients and eco-certified preservatives where needed.

Why should one switch to natural products?
For that, I would urge the consumers to look at the labels of the products they are using and research the ingredients on the internet. Till one is not aware and doesn’t educate himself, there is no point switching to natural products, as it is very easy to get fooled. Natural products should generally be toxin free, naturally derived, have natural actives and be sustainable in their making. We are striving to be even better; right now our caps and pumps are made of plastic but we want to change that in future. The idea is to keep learning and evolving.

What is the USP of your products?
They are non-toxic, safe and super effective with long term results. We are committed to being ambassadors of clean beauty. Each and every product is nature-derived with a strong focus on sustainability and efficacy.

Your bestseller product?
The Hyaluronic and Vitamin C Serum (12 per cent most stable form of vitamin C).

Aishwarya Sawarna Nir,
Founder, Global Beauty Secrets

How and why did you start this brand?
Being raised in a religious family, I was exposed to a rich cultural heritage. I was also lucky enough to be deeply influenced by my grandmother’s wisdom in using natural ingredients on her skin, which she often applied on mine. It made me feel cared for and replenished. However as I grew up and was exposed to mainstream beauty brands, I started missing the care and affection of my grandmother and the way she nourished me with natural ingredients. Not just us, since eons women have bonded over ancient beauty and bathing traditions across the world. With time and other advancements of human civilisation, the concept of coming together as a community during moments of personal care vanished. With a vision to instil personal care, I started Global Beauty Secrets with inspiration from ancient beauty traditions around the world. True beauty reflects through effective personal care and I want to adapt the same wisdom into our everyday lives. I truly believe the journey to becoming beautiful should be beautiful too. I have extensively worked on the product range, collection and sourcing and wanted to make sure all the ingredients that we use have an interesting story and uniqueness about them.

Tell us about the product range.
Our Classic Collection has 15 products across face, body and hair and has a unique assortment of ingredients inspired from diverse cultural rituals like The Japanese Adzuki Bean Facewash and The Turkish Rhassoul Clay that are procured from the best. We a have a very interesting Body Mist of rose and kewda , an ancient fragrance that has been blended with mandarin orange and lemongrass on an aloe vera base for a beautiful sensory experience. I was inspired by the importance that Kamasutra places on roses as a tool for romance. So we have a beautiful hair oil inspired by Queen Cleopatra who applied castor oil and honey to keep her hair moisturised and frizz free. I realised that women detested using hair oils because of the odours attached to them; hence the uniqueness of our oil is its beautiful underlying sandalwood fragrance. Our Shringar Ras collection is inspired by Indian flavours of beauty and the ancient vedic rituals. In this range, we also have products named after rituals such as Chandani Avahana Ubtan, Pushpanjali Floral Toner and Ghrit Aarti Skin Salve.

What makes these products natural and eco-friendly?
We use natural extracts and safe formulations to help balance ph and prevent allergies. We also avoid testing on animals. Our packaging is recyclable and extracts are sourced sustainably from natural origins.

Why should one switch to natural products?
Natural products are basically a result of time-tested wisdom and anything produced in the lap of nature is bound to be more effective than anything produced in the lab. Therefore, a timely switch to natural products helps one invest in their personal care sustainably.

What is the USP of your products?
Our USP is our unique legacy. I treat every product as a message in a bottle from women in one corner of the world to women in another. Every product we have has a unique legacy complete with its own culture, aesthetics, ingredients and overall story.

Your bestseller product?
It’s the Turkish Rhassoul Clay. When I was researching on the Hamam culture, I stumbled upon the fact that women have been using Rhassoul on their body as well as hair. I always wanted to make a hair mask that helps women strengthen their scalp as all hair worries arise from it and Rhassoul seemed to be the perfect answer to it. It is rich in minerals, exfoliating and extremely conditioning and helps strengthen and cleanse the scalp. It also conditions one’s hair across its length and seemed to be the perfect ingredient to maintain hair health from root to tip. I chose to craft this ingredient as a hair mask and then launched it as body soap.

Rashi Bahel Mehra,
Founder, Alanna

How and why did you start this brand?
I was working with a multinational company when I realised there is a gap in the skincare range segments available across the Indian market. Our consumers had two options to choose from: chemically-infused products offered by cosmetic giants and the organic products at premium price points that were not affordable. I feel that since natural ingredients are sourced from Mother Nature, it should not be a luxury but everyone’s right to be able to access its benefits. Hence I planned a breakthrough with Alanna, which is a 100 % natural and vegan skin care brand that is affordable for the average Indian consumer. I began with homemade batches, initially selling them only to friends and family. The reviews were exhilarating and so I formally launched the brand Alanna in 2015, with an array of 18 products. Since then, the journey has been beautiful and Alanna has organically grown creating a loyal user base.

Tell us about the product range.
Our range comprises 18 products that include lip balms, face packs, moisturisers, toners, body butter, hair oils, cold-processed soaps and shampoo bars. Our products contain essential oils, organic cold pressed oils, fruit and nut extracts with misty naturally derived fragrances that help in nourishing your skin and enhancing the beauty. All our ingredients are sourced from the different states of India that they are popular from.

What makes these products natural and eco-friendly?
Our preparation is inspired from nature’s goodness with herbs derived from sustainable agriculture that ensures each product is skin and earth safe. The products are chemical and cruelty free, crafted with time-tested recipes and ingredients.

Why should one switch to natural products?
Organic beauty care products contain ingredients which are derived from the nature. Increasingly people have witnessed blatant cases of harmful effects of chemical-based skin care products, whereas organic products do not have such side effects. Also the unethical practices carried out by cosmetic giants have caused people to lose trust and turn to healthier and viable alternatives.

What is the USP of your products?
Alanna is not only cruelty-free but also PETA approved and FDA approved which ensures that our products undergo the highest level of tests and checks so that they are skin- friendly for the consumers. Our objective is to not only bring ethical beauty products which are cruelty free and vegan to our consumers but also bring it with sensitive price points so that more people can access these organic products.

Your bestseller product?
Some of our best selling products include the 4 in 1 Exotic clay mask, Deep cleanser face pack, Night miracle serum , Activated charcoal and green tea, Cold processed soap, Chocolate lip balm and Lip scrub and Under eye gel.

Tanushree Ishani Das & Pooja Karegoudar
Co-Founders, BodyCafé

How and why did you start this brand?
Both of us wanted to try a brand that is understood and caters to the most common vanity issues and queries. Of course, we didn’t want to try anything that was not organic or natural. We wanted to start something that was affordable, high on quality, effective, environmentally responsible and most importantly inspires people to adapt to a healthy lifestyle and make choices that would contribute to their overall wellbeing. We wanted to start this because organic products were mostly catering to people’s beauty needs but no brand was offering products for vanity, new horns, home care, pet care, etc. We knew that our brand would be a one-stop shopping experience for the audience. Thus, BodyCafé was born. At the onset, we never really had a very large scale image in mind because we wanted to start the venture entirely on our own merit. Of course, that came with its own set of challenges but the learning curve was highly motivating.

Initially, we started experimenting on each other and quite surprised by the effects that these natural goodies had on us. It was very liberating to break free from the commercial brands. This captured the interests of our friends and family and then it was a snowball effect. Before we realised, we started delivering across India. We are now a two-year old brand and have captured the hearts of national and international users and some notable celebrities. The exciting part is that the growth has been organic just like the brand.

Tell us about the product range.
Our brand offers organic products for skin and hair – artisan soaps, lip balms, scrubs, mists, toners, serums, hair oils – and wellness products such as pain balms, sanitisers, intimate wash, mani-pedi butters, hand and nail creams, cuticle oils, baby care and pet care (body wash) products. We also have bespoke products and premiere range depending on our client requirements. Additionally, we have room diffusers that are made to order, dish washing liquid, soap nut (washing kernels) and floor cleaners in the home care category. We have a men’s range that covers beard cream, beard oil and aftershave cream. The spa range has products that can be used to get salon-like experience at the luxury of their homes.

What makes these products natural and eco-friendly?
We are a beauty and wellness brand based on authentic and traditional beauty practices. We take inspiration from ancient home remedies, the goodness of nature and ayurveda. Painstaking research, highest standards of purity, authenticity, quality and ethical sourcing of organic ingredients go into the making of our products. We ensure every product is handcrafted so that our users feel as though they are in nature’s lap. We have body butters with flavours such as basil vetiver, lily, lavender rosemary or cocorose; we use frankincense as one of the core ingredients for men’s range. Our combinations are very unique; for instance, rose milk and goat milk soap, green tea and goat milk soap, basil body butter, star anise soap, etc.

We try to stay connected to our roots yet be contemporary; we also have an edge with our home range. We handcraft our products so our users do not have to compromise on the quality. In terms of pricing, we are affordable because we believe in being effective rather than highly expensive. The fact that our users have the option of customising their grooming range is what makes us stand out.

Why should one switch to natural products?
From the moment we wake up till we’re back in our bed again, we are stuck in an endless battle of us versus stress. It’s only a matter of time when it all boils over. Amidst this manic hustle-bustle of life, people want a healthy lifestyle and all they need is a little support to help them start investing in themselves. Using natural products helps in holistic development.

What is the USP of your products?
We handcraft our products and do not compromise on the quality. We are pioneers in the wellness range and our pricing is affordable. From a working professional to someone living on pension can afford our products. We also customise products and provide our users with bespoke products so the users can have them made as per their choice and preference. Another major USP is that we theme our products and launch surprise items every quarter. One month we decided to pay homage to Indian spices and introduced Star Anise cinnamon soap, Peppermint patchouli soap and next month we launched a foot and hand spa range based on cocktail flavours. The idea is to add a contemporary touch to traditional recipes.

Your bestseller product?
Most definitely our soaps and body washes get sold like hot cakes. The spa range is also gaining popularity especially the cuticle oil. Our lip balms are definitely a hit and so are our wellness products such as toilet seat spray and sanitisers as they are easy to carry and super essential. The intimate wash has no alcohol, so women as well as men are using it. People love the combinations we use in our body butter because we do not add synthetic fragrances.

Gaurav Aggarwal,
CEO, One Life

How and why did you start this brand?
We are a leading manufacturer of Vitamin B3 from India and human and animal nutrition is our expertise. Hence venturing into the consumer healthcare market was a natural vertical for us. Having said that, there is growing need of supplementation in our region. The food consumed today does not provide adequate nutrients as required by the human body. Lifestyle changes have also resulted in various health issues. We therefore aim to help consumers prevent themselves from various issues which are largely avoidable.

Tell us about your product range.
In the beauty space, we have products such as luxury handmade bathing bars. These are completely free from chemicals and take approximately four weeks per bar to manufacture. They are rich with essential oils such as organic coconut oil. We have seen many consumers shift from the traditional refined coconut oil to organic raw cold pressed coconut oil. The cold pressed process ensures the vital nutrients in the oil remain intact. Consumers use this oil as a natural make-up remover and moisturiser as it is extremely light on the skin. We also look forward to launching our hair care range very soon.

What makes these products natural and eco-friendly?
With no or minimal chemicals, our products are eco friendly. This apart, we also remain conscious about the packaging and try to be as natural and environmental-friendly as possible.

Why should one switch to natural products?
Our body gets attacked by harmful ingredients consumed in various ways through the environment and pollution. Therefore, it is highly recommended to use natural products that are free of chemicals.

What is the USP of your products?
We follow the strictest norms in raw material purchase, processing and packaging. Being a vitamin producer for 40 years and exporting to more than 100 countries, we can safely say that we understand human body requirement.

Your bestseller product in the beauty space?
The coconut oil and bathing bars are our fast-moving products.
