Read on to know about the do’s and don’ts of hair oiling.
Tress trouble? Surely you’ve heard of this wonder solution from your grandmother, mother, best friend and probably even your hairstylist – ‘Oil’. Whether it is the soothing lavender, magical coconut or the conditioning almond, oil is known for its nourishing properties. If you have been using very little or no oil in your haircare regime, it’s about time you did!
Oiling might seem like a pretty simple task. Squeeze some oil out and apply it onto the hair and your done. Right? Wrong. There are some points to be followed when applying oil. Don’t worry you don’t need to hunt for the right and wrong of applying oil for we have listed below, the do’s and don’ts.
Do’s For Oiling Your Hair
It’s not just your hair, your scalp needs nourishment too. The roots benefit the most with hair oil. Massage the oil into the scalp gently for the oil to permeate deeply into the hair cuticles for it to nourish the strands from root to tip. This also stimulates blood flow. Oiling enhances the quality of your hair making it strong, shiny and luscious.
Hot oil treatments are greatly beneficial for the overall health of the hair. While a hot oil treatment can be time consuming, indulging in one regularly reduces dryness in both hair and scalp. It reduces frizz and dandruff, prevents brittle hair and even split ends. It should be done at least twice a week for best results.
Oil is generally applied into the hair before shampooing. But it doesn’t always have to be like that. It can also be used as a finishing touch to give your hair that natural shine. Especially if you have dry hair. Take a few drops of the oil into your palm and work it into the lengths of your hair to make it more manageable instantly.
Don’ts For Oiling Your Hair
Do not over oil your hair. Oiling hair has a lot of benefits but only if applied in correct amounts. Depending on your scalp and hair type, apply enough for it to treat your scalp and hair lengths. If required use a hot towel wrap around your hair for the oil to get absorbed better. Too much oil will weigh your tresses down and make your scalp greasy.
Avoid oiling hair everyday. While oiling is healthy for hair, scalp and the roots, going overboard with it might also do damages. Oiling hair daily can also make the hair sticky thereby attracting a lot of dirt and dust, which will result in unclean scalp and hair. Also, using oil daily means having to shampoo daily as well, this again is not good for the hair.
Don’t apply oil to wet hair. Oil should always be applied only to dry hair. If applied to wet hair it will just make the hair more delicate and easy to break resulting in hair fall.
