Organic revolution

The rise of organic brands and products is more than just a passing phase, says Aruna Mukerjee. It could well be the future of the beauty and skincare industries.

Organic products have been around for the longest time, but it’s only in the past couple of years that the world has woken up to this fact and started adopting them in their daily routine. We first opened up our kitchens to the organic invasion. And gradually, it has now spread to our dressers and bathrooms as well.

To get a better idea of why organic products are good for your body, one must look at the bigger picture. Organically produced products are a result of organic farming. This kind of farming doesn’t compromise on the health of the crops for a richer produce. In fact, it avoids chemical fertilizers and pesticides at all costs to keep the crop rich in natural nutrients and maintain its health. Results have proven that these crops, when consumed, are more nutritious and enriched with vitamins.

Now that we have covered the scientific bit of it, how do you as a consumer go about looking for organic beauty products in a market full of chemicals? Well, worry not; we’ve got you covered in that regard.

Skincare is the most important part of a beauty regime, and eating organic just isn’t enough. It’s a common misconception that everything organic must be expensive. Oddly enough, it’s the non-organic products that cost more. While we are speaking skincare, ayurvedic products are one of the best bets when it comes to going organic. Thanks to the recent surge of organic products in the market, today there are a variety of products one can choose from—cleansers, toners and eye creams, to bath salts, face packs and lip balms!

Kama Ayurveda is a prime example of an all round ayurvedic and organic brand that has much to offer, in both the skincare and haircare department. The Kumkumadi Tailam is an excellent example of effective ayurvedic/organic skincare. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but completely worthwhile as it really does make your skin glow within a week. The brand also has much to offer in the terms of different herbal oils that are beneficial for your skin as well as your hair.

On the more budget side, Soultree is one of those brands that one must look out for when going on an organic shopping spree. Its range of cold-pressed essential oils, kajals and lip balms are bound to leave you impressed. Each of their products is manufactured without preservatives, silicones or fragrance, making it absolutely safe for even those with sensitive skin.

Budget-friendly organic make-up is yet to make a popular appearance in the Indian market. However, there are brands like The Body Shop that cater to our organic beauty needs within an affordable budget. The key is to pick and choose carefully when it comes to this particular brand. While some of their products are absolute hits, there are also many that will leave you a bit unsatisfied. Their lipsticks, highlighters, blushes and body butters are known to be favored by the most prestigious beauty bloggers. However, if you are a kajal and lip balm sort of girl, then you will find plenty of organic options in the market to your liking.

As a rule, one should always take a close look at the ingredients list before buying any product. Beauty products, in particular, should be under this scrutiny as there are several brands in the market that claim to be ayurvedic or organic but have numerous chemicals listed on the label at the back. Once this habit is inculcated, you will soon begin to recognise ingredients that do not suit your skin, which will result in overall improvement and health.
