“I bought the magazine at 11 a.m. and within 20 minutes of dedicated reading, I had decided to get rid of my long locks and have now got cool, spiky hair, just like Yuvraj Singh on the WWW page.”

r. Jamuna Pai, a name synonymous with cosmetology, class and charm, tells BENAIFER J. MIRZA about her inspiration, love for perfection and more.

It is said that a great deal about an individual’s future can be ascertained by his /her childhood. You realise how true this is as soon as you meet Dr. Jamuna Pai. Right from her youth, the renowned cosmetic physician, aesthetician and founder of Blush Clinics Pvt. Ltd. has been particular about her appearance, be it her shoes, socks or even the pleats of her school uniform, which would be ironed and re-ironed until she got it right.

Having spent 16 years in the beauty and skincare business, Dr. Pai, a medical graduate from Mumbai’s Nair Hospital, is a name to reckon with. She has helped put India on the global map of cosmetology. Her personal style, poise and persona mesmerise you. There is no doubt why everyone — from Bollywood stars and beauty pageant participants to corporate houses — swears by Dr. Pai and her treatments.

SKINCARE SECRETS

Dr. Pai believes there are certain things one needs to keep in mind to have a good quality of life:

  • A well-maintained lifestyle, which includes correct food and proper nutritional supplements.
  • The use of sunscreen, regardless of the SPF it contains. According to her, it was previously believed that the higher the SPF, the more it protected you; thus, you wore it only once. Now, irrespective of whether it is SPF 10 or 90, it works only for 3-4 hours, so you have to reapply it, even on your make-up.
  • Drink at least two litres of water every day to flush out all the toxins in your body
  • Eat lots of broccoli, beetroot, spinach and other deep-coloured vegetables as well as fruits such as strawberry, mango and papaya. Drink as many fruit juices as possible. Try to include wheatgrass in your diet, as that is the richest source of antioxidants.
  • Moisturise and hydrate your skin, depending on your skin type.
  • Most importantly, maintain a high level of hygiene.
Here are some of her no-nos

  • A wrong and unhealthy lifestyle.
  • Pinching a pimple.
  • Anything in excess, whether it is cigarettes, oily food, sugar or maida (flour), which is bad for your skin and health.
  • Waxing facial, chest and back hair, as that could result in those areas breaking out into pimples. It takes almost three months to remove the scars.
MY BRAND AND I

Speaking about the changes that she has seen in herself, Dr. Pai says, “There has been a huge positive change. Just as I influence people, I too am influenced by the rich and famous coming to me, and whatever I like about them — be it the way someone carries her bag, wears her shoes, the posture, the carriage, the way someone’s nails are done — I gather inspiration from it all.”

Talking about where she plans to take her brand in the next few years, Dr. Pai elaborates, “We are opening a training institute in cosmetology for doctors. It should be operational in the next three months. We are currently working on its curriculum. If people like the systems in which we teach, at some point, we may start training in the area of hair too.”

WHAT INSPIRES ME

“I truly believe in the spirit of entrepreneurship. I can’t point out just one person and say that he or she has inspired me since childhood; it has been a process. I like to read autobiographies and get inspired by the lives of people. I have read the autobiographies of US President Barack Obama, Lee Iacocca and Sidney Sheldon. I am inspired by all these people who have worked hard and have been successful; those who have simply inherited money don’t impress me much. Having said that, I won’t say that someone like Ratan Tata doesn’t inspire me! He has done some great work in the recent past and it has all been successful.”
