Raising the bar
SEEMA V. JERAJANI showcases her collection, “Avant Garde”, at a recent seminar organised by HIP (Hair Inspired People).
These styles are a feast for the eyes! There is texture in abundance,
but the emphasis is on height, volume and glamour. I have shown
how to dress hair while playing with texture and using hair additions
as well as the creative, artistic aspect of emerging fashion techniques
and avant-garde hairdressing.
A day in the life of a trainee
Hairstyling is not the easiest job in the world and many of us are curious to know what it takes to learn the ropes of this profession. We get Fatima Virani, trainee at Placid’s Hairdressing and Skin, to tell us what her typical day is like.
Starting her day at 10:30 a.m., Fatima Virani has much to pack in at Placid’s Hairdressing and Skin, under the helpful supervision of Placid and senior stylist Anu Agade. Between Tuesday and Friday, not only does Fatima Virani learn something new every week, she also gets the chance to practise till she is perfect at it.
When she first joined, she learnt simple, straight haircuts in the first half of the day, while the second half was dedicated to blow-drys and Velcro rollers. The rest of the week was left for practising to perfection. Every week, a new technique is learnt and the trainers patiently allow their student to take as long as she needs to get it right. Fatima has now moved on to learning new haircuts and more advanced techniques. Here is a peek into a day in her life:
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Placid teaches Fatima a new haircut. He then blow-dries the hair to help Fatima hone her skills.
1:00 p.m.: Lunch break
2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Fatima learns a technique called perm winding, that is, how to use spiral rollers to create permanent curls.
4:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.: Though Fatima’s shift ends at 4.30 p.m., Placid allows her to stay on till the salon closes for the day to watch and learn while he and his staff work on clients.
Fatima couldn’t be more thrilled to be training under Placid. “I had heard a lot about Placid since his days with Nalini (of Nalini and Yasmin). He is a patient and kind teacher. The course is more than just worth it; I not only get to learn complex hairdressing techniques, I also get to watch and learn how Placid and the other stylists deal with and handle clients, which is something I would have learnt nowhere else,” says this enthusiastic student.
