Away from the cacophony of Bengaluru city lies a holistic wellness centre, nestled well within nature’s lush green lap. HAIR’S HENA DESAI explores the Ayurvedic heaven that Sri Sri Ayurveda Panchakarma is. She shares her experience with you.
As I commenced my journey from Bengaluru airport to Sri Sri Ayurveda Panchakarma (SSAP), I assumed that it would be just like any other spa. But I was in for a surprise—SSAP turned out to be so much more than what I had imagined. Located in the outskirts of Bengaluru city, this holistic wellness centre is an initiative by The Art of Living Foundation, set up under the guidance of His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. It can best be described as a facility that employs the ancient science of Ayurveda to address all your health and wellness issues, helping you channelise your energy and rejuvenate your senses.
After a warm welcome, I was walked through the philosophy and functioning of SSAP. Mr. Sreejith B S, COO, SSAP explained, “As per the tenets of Ayurveda, when the Pancha Mahabhuttas or five elements within us are balanced, our body is healthy. These five elements promote the functioning of the Panchaendriya or our five senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. At our centre, we have developed an eco-system that resonates these five senses, which provides a holistic experience to our guests, this helps them heal their mind, body and soul.”
My experience started with the naadi pariksha or the pulse diagnosis—I was told that each journey here begins with this, post which, based on the diagnosis, a customised wellness program is prescribed for you. The concept had me baffled initially—a complete health diagnosis and insight into your personality traits just by feeling the pulse for a minute? It seemed to good to be true. But as Dr. Mitali Madhusmita elaborated on everything from a description of my nature to the health issues i was facing (without me having briefed her about this at all, obviously), I was completely and utterly amazed! Guilty of leading an unhealthy and stressful lifestyle, this experienced physician sentenced me to two days of detoxification and rejuvenation and I was not complaining about this!
I was prescribed the Shirodhara and Uzhichil or the deep tissue massage, both aimed at helping me relax. I was restricted to consume only Sattvic food—healthy, easy to digest meals prepared in the Ayurvedic way, personalised as per the doctor’s recommendations. I was then led to Meera Vanam, my luxurious living space with an aura that immediately calmed me.
Early next morning after a sumptuous breakfast, I headed to Krishna Kutir, the treatment facility, and was ushered in for the Uzichil treatment. Beginning with a customary prayer, the therapist began working her magic by indulging me in this deep-tissue massage. Using hot sesame oil and ancient Ayurvedic massage techniques, I was told that this therapy was great for toning the skin and improving blood circulation. Focusing on pressure points, my therapist addressed all my aches and pains wonderfully. The massage concluded with glorious ten minutes spent in a spa steam bed. After this 45 minute Uzichil, started the wonderfully relaxing Shirodhara. I was already blissfully pampered, unsure of whether I could handle more! The Shirodhara treatment entailed pouring of warm oil onto my forehead and scalp, in a gentle, continuous stream. It contained a medicated blend of various oils and herbs, all prepared at their own factory, combining ancient Ayurvedic secrets that helped relieve stress, fatigue, nerve issues and improved the overall health. It also had great cosmetic benefits like bringing back the shine to my hair and reducing hair loss. My therapist gently massaged my head as the oil caressed my scalp and slowly I fell into deep slumber, completely unaware of all worries that I was wrestling! I walked out of the treatment room after my therapies for the day ended; I felt as though I was floating—there was only one thought resonating in my mind that I was in the ultimate spa heaven!
On day two, I was in for something special—after a day of relaxing therapies, they had a treat in store for my skin too! I had been signed up for the Kaya Lepam, an exotic body wrap that improves the skin’s complexion, as it tightens and tones the skin. Starting with the Abhyanga or the traditional ayurvedic massage, they applied a special paste of rice extract, herbal powders, coconut milk and almond milk all over my body, wrapping me up in banana leaves. After leaving this paste on for about 15 minutes and after a relaxing steam and bath, I was pleasantly surprised with the results—I had soft, smooth, radiant skin and was glowing! Needless to say, my make-up kit brought from home remained untouched through the rest of my stay.
Happy, rejuvenated and relaxed— these were the only words that could describe how I felt after the luxurious pampering that was offered to me at SSAP! Along with excellent treatments, the great ambience and impeccable service provided made this an unforgettable experience, one from which I walked away with a determination to lead a healthier lifestyle and with a promise to return very soon!
