Eating for beauty doesn’t always mean gorging on those healthy salads ( Although those leafy greens do wonders for your skin!) Indulge in the ultimate treat – chocolate – and reap some beauty and health benefits while you’re at it.
Chocolate and Beauty
Yes you’ve heard it right, chocolate is good for your skin!
But it’s not exactly the same milk bar that we binge-eat on almost everyday (Let’s be honest, we all can’t resist taking that one bite off the bar). It’s in fact, the dark variety that’s good. Only the dark chocolate that holds at least 70% cocoa works wonders, not just on our waistline but on our face as well.
As a matter of fact, did you know that cocoa was a super-food? Well get to know!
Rich in iron, calcium and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E, dark chocolate nourishes your skin from the inside out to replace lost moisture. Besides, dark chocolate also helps combat stress. The cocoa content reduces the stress hormones, which means less collagen breakdown in the skin, and fewer wrinkles.
Also, cocoa also contains flavonols, antioxidants that help protect your skin from UV damage, reduces dark spots and increases blood flow (which means glowing skin!). What’s more, previous research has suggested that the flavonols found in dark chocolate improve skin hydration and thickness – which means more improved skin!
Dark chocolate also, adds shine to your lustrous locks. It promotes healthy hair growth too! Indeed, with the right ingredients to go, one could easily whip up some homemade hair masks that would help them with the same.
Overindulgence of the dark variety means that you’re getting a lot more than just flavonoids. You’re also getting fat, sugar and a whole lot of calories – something that you’ll get with just a few bites of the milk variety.
(And, honestly that’s what we’re trying to avoid here)
Thus portions matter, a lot! In fact, research suggests that having two or three ounces of 70% (or more) dark chocolate a week, is enough to reap in the beauty benefits. Besides, there are many (and we mean a lot of people) who don’t like the taste of dark chocolate.
But don’t worry, as they can still use dark chocolate as an ingredient in one of the home remedies that are mentioned below:
