Why Is Dark Chocolate Good For Your Skin?

Eating for beauty doesn’t always mean gorging on those healthy salads ( Although those leafy greens do wonders for your skin!) Indulge in the ultimate treat – chocolate – and reap some beauty and health benefits while you’re at it.

Chocolate and Beauty

Yes you’ve heard it right, chocolate is good for your skin!

But it’s not exactly the same milk bar that we binge-eat on almost everyday (Let’s be honest, we all can’t resist taking that one bite off the bar). It’s in fact, the dark variety that’s good. Only the dark chocolate that holds at least 70% cocoa works wonders, not just on our waistline but on our face as well.

As a matter of fact, did you know that cocoa was a super-food? Well get to know!

Rich in iron, calcium and vitamins A, B1, C, D and E, dark chocolate nourishes your skin from the inside out to replace lost moisture. Besides, dark chocolate also helps combat stress. The cocoa content reduces the stress hormones, which means less collagen breakdown in the skin, and fewer wrinkles.

Also, cocoa also contains flavonols, antioxidants that help protect your skin from UV damage, reduces dark spots and increases blood flow (which means glowing skin!). What’s more, previous research has suggested that the flavonols found in dark chocolate improve skin hydration and thickness – which means more improved skin!

Dark chocolate also,  adds shine to your lustrous locks. It promotes healthy hair growth too! Indeed, with the right ingredients to go, one could easily whip up some homemade hair masks that would help them with the same.

Portions matter:

Overindulgence of the dark variety means that you’re getting a lot more than just flavonoids. You’re also getting fat, sugar and a whole lot of calories – something that you’ll get with just a few bites of the milk variety.

(And, honestly that’s what we’re trying to avoid here)

Thus portions matter, a lot! In fact, research suggests that having two or three ounces of 70% (or more) dark chocolate a week, is enough to reap in the beauty benefits. Besides, there are many (and we mean a lot of people) who don’t like the taste of dark chocolate.

But don’t worry, as they can still use dark chocolate as an ingredient in one of the home remedies that are mentioned below:

Dark Chocolate and Honey Face Mask:

If dry skin is a major concern for you, the dark chocolate and honey face mask might just be your new best friend. A perfect blend of dark chocolate and honey, this face mask will help retain moisture in your skin and give it that dewy glow! Just add about 1/4th cup of melted dark chocolate, 1 tsp of honey and a few drops of freshly squeezed lemon juice in a bowl. Mix the paste well and apply it generously all over your face and neck. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and rinse it off with some warm water.

Dark Chocolate and Clay Face Mask:

For toning and firming up your skin, the dark chocolate and clay face mask is best the answer. Simply mix about ½ cup of melted dark chocolate with 2 tbsps of clay powder, in a bowl. Apply the paste gently, and let it sit for a few minutes. Once it dries, wash it off and pat your skin dry with a soft towel.

Tip: Even if you make some extra paste, you can store the rest in a container.

Dark Chocolate and Yogurt Face Mask:

A perfect blend of yogurt and dark chocolate, this face mask will help dissolve dead skin cells  and tighten your pores. Melt five cubes of dark chocolate and add 1 ½ tsp of fresh yogurt. Mix well and add 1 tbsp of gram flour. Mix again and apply the paste on your face and neck area. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and scrub off the mask. Rinse well later.

Dark Chocolate and Milk Cream Face Mask:

The nourishing properties of milk and cream, make this face mask a perfect remedy for the dehydrated and extra dry skin. Simply blend in some melted dark chocolate with a tbsp of heavy cream or milk and  honey, and lo! Your face mask is ready. Apply it to the face and neck and wash it off after 20 minutes. Wipe your face with a tissue and use a toner to freshen up your skin and to close the pores

Dark Chocolate and Fruit Face Mask:

Brighten your skin with the dark chocolate and fruit face mask. To make this mask, blend in two big cubes of watermelon and a strawberry. Melt half a cup of dark chocolate and once cool, add the fruit paste to it. Apply it gently on your face and neck area, and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Later, rinse well with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Bottom Line:

If chocolate is your weakness, then indulging in an ounce of the right dark variety each day, makes it not only a delicious treat, but also provides benefits for your skin. And, if you don’t like the taste you can always whip up some of the above masks, easily at home.
