You Said It..

“I live in a joint family and we are five women in the house and this mag is a steal… we all gain from it and look forward to the forthcoming issues.”

And so it began…
My mum is a make-up artist and I’ve grown up with cousins who have been in the hair and beauty industry. After my college break, I decided to give hair styling a shot. Although I initially started with make-up, my natural inclination is more towards styling. I’ve been in this field for almost three years now (I started when I was 16) and I love every bit of it.

Your strengths
Styling is definitely my forte. I also love cutting, but I feel styling could actually make or break a look. A good cut without a not-so-great style doesn’t really work.

The next big move
I am still learning — there’s so much to learn! Another possibility is to start training later in my career. Although, I am not really involved with training right now, I would definitely love to do it at some point. I think training is a great way to keep yourself updated and is also a good way to pass on your knowledge.

Inspired thinking
I am constantly inspired by my clientele. I am also a very moody person. There are days when I love to try something crazy and the there are days when I go for a totally demure look. Besides, Bandra offers a mixed bag of clientele — from college goers to middle-aged men — we have it all here. So, the means for experimenting is plenty.

Biggest haircare faux pas
One of the biggest mistakes is to comb curly hair when it’s dry. That only opens up the curls, making the hair frizzy and unmanageable. The best way to get fab curls is to condition the hair properly and comb it gently when wet with a wide-toothed comb. Also, it is a myth that oiling the hair makes it healthy. It’s actually the scalp that needs to be oiled and not the hair. This is because once we oil our hair, we tend to overwash it, which leads to dry and frizzy hair.

I miss…
I have not really missed out on anything in life. I have great friends (in the salon) and outside. Weekends are fun. But, what I do miss is studying. I gave up my studies when I had to pursue this career, but some day soon I intend on going back to class.

Lessons to dig
It is important to stay focused in this career. People have to understand that it is a serious business and if you want to get ahead, you need to focus your time and energy well. It is a career option like any other and it is equally demanding.
